What to Wear for a Professional Headshot
Choose clothing that suits your role, works with the background and keeps attention on your face—not your outfit.

Choose an outfit you would wear to meet an important client. Bring one alternative and arrive with both ready to photograph.
Start with where the photograph will appear
A partner biography, a provider directory and a real estate agent profile have different audiences. Dress for the people who will see the image, rather than for a generic idea of “professional.” Look at your organization’s website and ask whether the photograph should feel formal, approachable or somewhere in between.
If this is part of a company session, check the wardrobe brief before choosing an outfit. A shared level of formality matters more than making everyone wear the same color.
Keep the face as the focal point
Solid colors and uncomplicated patterns are a useful starting point. Very small checks or tightly repeated stripes can look distracting at profile-picture size and may produce unwanted patterns on camera. Large logos and high-contrast graphics can also compete with your expression.
There is no single color that suits every person or every background. Ask what backdrop is planned, then choose clothing that separates comfortably from it. If you normally wear a jacket, bring the shirt or top that works underneath; a layer can change the look without a complete outfit change.
Fit and preparation matter more than buying something new
Try the outfit while sitting and standing. A neckline that feels fine in a mirror may shift when you sit; a jacket may bunch around the shoulders. Choose a comfortable fit that lets you move without continually adjusting it.
Press or steam garments ahead of time and transport them on hangers. Check collars, lapels and shoulders for lint. A spare top is useful if you are unsure between two choices or if the first one gets creased during the trip.
- Bring your usual glasses if you wear them at work.
- Keep accessories intentional and comfortable.
- Check the outfit for wrinkles, lint and missing buttons.
- Bring a second option rather than relying on a last-minute purchase.
Look like the person clients will meet
Keep hair, makeup and grooming close to your everyday professional appearance. A headshot should help someone recognize you, not introduce an unfamiliar version of you. If you are planning a major haircut or a new style, give yourself time to decide whether it feels right before photo day.
You do not need to arrive knowing how to pose. Tell the photographer where the image will be used, mention any wardrobe concern and let small adjustments happen during the session.
